I’m currently reading the book, “The Subtle Art of not Giving a F*ck” by Mark Mason and I’m so inspired I feel like I can conquer the universe.

Enter frenemy officemate, blabbing about Christmas givings and asking me suggestions where it would be good to do charity because last year they gave food to street people. And I was like “I don’t have any idea” and I said it like I wasn’t interested at anything at all. And he was like “Ang lungkot naman ng buhay mo”. Hmmp. In my mind I was actually practicing “The Subtle Art of not Giving a F*ck”. I don’t care about where they do their charity but it doesn’t mean that I don’t care about the people who needs charity. The thing is wherever they do their charity is not my concern, if in the near future I decide to do my own Christmas giving, which for him would probably make my life less sadder (insert echoing voice of “Ang lungkot naman ng buhay mo”), then that would be the time I’ll think about it.

There’s still an echoing thoughts in my head also that charity is a privileged people’s way of following the society’s rule about “giving is sharing blah blah blah”. Then later on posting it on social media. And again, I’m not against charities, I just feel like people are just following this bandwagon without really thinking enough about the things they’re giving. I once joined a Christmas event for children on the orphanage and while we discussed the arrangements with the management, they asked us not to feed the kids with any fastfoods because ever since Christmas season came, they’ve been having parties almost everyday and people would bring them Jollibee or McDonalds. Alas, they also told us to just do it for at most 3 hours because they have an afternoon appointment after and they don’t want the kids to get tired.

I still think that sometimes we do charity not for other people but to make ourselves happy and feel good about it. It’s a win-win game sometimes though. You help other people and yourself. But mostly self comes first.

Ugh. So in the end, I’m overthinking this again.

  1. BBSS si frenemy — bilib na bilib sa sarili. Charot hahaha.

Agree ako sa point mo on charity, Yerxen. Naalala ko ang sinabi ni Eduardo Galeano: “I don’t believe in charity. I believe in solidarity. Charity is so vertical. It goes from the top to the bottom. Solidarity is horizontal. It respects the other person. I have a lot to learn from other people.”

Nothing wrong with sharing and giving, of course, but let’s not yak about how noble we are for helping the poor while shaming other “non-charitable” people in the process.
